Resolutions

by Jodifur on January 2, 2012

I've never been a huge New Year's resolution person.  I tend to make random changes whenever.  Like 2 years ago on a random Monday I declared I was done with diet soda and I was.  (It was a bit more complicated than that, it was giving me terrible headaches, but it really was a random Monday.)  I took up running, I don't know, in March, or something like that.

My point is, I don't really do the whole New Year's resolution thing.

But 2012 is the year of change, and in honor of the year of change, I'm making some New Year's resolutions.

I'm committing to running a 10k this year.  It is totally, absolutely, entirely insane, but I am.  I ran my first training run on Dec 31st.  I'm trying to remember if I wanted to die when I started couch to 5k. Because the very first run in bridge to 10k almost killed me.

People who know me in real life are about to fall off their chairs, but I'm giving up alcohol for 6 weeks. (And sweets, but that is not really that big of a deal.)  6 weeks, January 2nd to February 18th, the day we leave for vacation.  (I'm not flying without liquor.)  I'm doing this for a variety of reasons.  To kick start some weight loss (also a resolution, because when is it not?), to get my butt in gear, to get serious about changing some bad habits.  But more than anything, I want to know that I can do it.  So I'm going to.  6 weeks. Alcohol free.

Yes, I'm serious.  Really truly serious.  So serious I took a picture of my last drink. It was sangria.  I also ate a lot of chips.

Our family resolution is to keep the house neater.  The cleaning service comes and the next day the house is a disaster again.  I can't do it anymore.  We bought this house two years ago and as much as I love it I just want it to be clean, and neat and grown up.  But I can't do it by myself.  So we are going to put things away and keep it clean.  At least we are going to try as best we can with a 6 year old and a dog.

I have one more resolution but I'm still keeping that to myself for now.

I'd love to hear what some of your resolutions are.

After reading about you doing it, I have started couch to 5k. I had my second run today (1st was Saturday) but I am counting today as the start because I tracked it using an app and Saturday was sort of a trial messing with only the stopwatch feature on my phone which was difficult… Anyway! You motivated me, and I am happy to say that it… Didn’t suck too bad! I ran/walked 1.96 miles in today’s time, and didn’t die! Always a plus! I would like to not only get in shape, but runs 5k like you. Maybe one day I too can bridge to the 10k.
As a funny aside, I spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out what a bridge had to do with running a 10 k this afternoon, until I figured out what it meant… Yeah. It has been a long vacation.

Yay, year of change! I hear you on the clean house thing. We’re that way too. It’s a problem.

That’s great, sounds like some healthy changes. I just signed up for my first 1/2 Marathon!

Funny. I’m not crazy about resolutions either, but I made one, too!

As we were having dinner on January 1, I asked my kids (7 and 3) what they wanted out of 2012. I didn’t get great answers from them (“play more video games” doesn’t count), but I shared that I wanted to keep our house cleaner and more organized so that I/we would feel happier when we are home. We did some serious decluttering after Christmas, so maybe it will be easier and we will be more dedicated.
Also, I’m surprised it takes a whole week for your house to get messed up again. I swear that I can barely tell the house has been cleaned the AFTERNOON after a cleaning day at my house. My 3 year old considers it a challenge to mess up the place as fast as she can. It is really sickening to see that happen on the SAME DAY. I get very very very frustrated and find it hard to maintain a positive attitude about it. There are often mommy tirades regarding the state of the house (I know I need to work on that).

My house is always a disaster and I AM THE CLEANING LADY. I’ve given up on trying to care about having a clean house. Instead, this year, I am going to focus on having as much fun as is humanly possible. That is basically my only goal, although I am doing this big list of fun things I want to accomplish over at my blog.
I was going to get fit and build a basic wardrobe and get organized but damn, I’ve been doing that stuff for 29 years and it ain’t working. I’m a 30 year old JD and in crucial need of some lazy, relaxing, selfish, old-fashioned fun.

I’m not buying anything for the month of January. No shoes, Starbucks or lip gloss. We’ll see how it goes. :p

Good luck with your resolutions! I decided not to resolve a goal this year, but a word. I figure I can spend the whole year working on one thing in any way I want. My word is “listen.” So far, it’s not working. If you discover a secret to keeping the house clean, fill me in.

It’s not you, it’s the six-year-old! My husband took our seven-year-old to Brazil for a month, and even with a toddler underfoot my house was perfect the whole time. Now I don’t feel guilty with the constant disaster!
