I said, going into this summer, that all I wanted was for Michael to have a fantastic summer. With all the stress of last year, I really just wanted him to have a carefree, lazy, happy summer.

And even now, with all the stress in our house, he still is. In fact, if you ask him, Doug getting laid off is awesome. It means that he is around every morning to play with. And around more at night. And even though Doug is spending every waking minute in our home office looking for a job, he is still home to give Michael guidance on the Star Wars wii game he is trying to play.
Michael has become this happy, self confident, lovely, not in trouble all the time, 6 year old. And I for one couldn’t be happier.
I just hope it translates into first grade.

So glad to read this! I know things are rough for you guys right now (and for me too with sooo muchhhh debbbbbttt) but it’s wonderful that your adorable little boy is having such a fun time! My girls just got back from 8 days with my ex and his mother and, whilst I became a tearful recluse, they have had a great time too. It’s what counts.
Here’s to the rest of the summer (still almost 6 weeks to go here).
Best wishes, and good job-hunting vibes winging your way from the south of France (where it RAINED all day. The world has gone crazy!)
I’m feeling very optimistic for Michael and for you, Jodi–you know my boy had a rough K year, but first grade was another story. A good deal of it was a change in teacher, but the way he grew emotionally and behaviorally last summer had an incredibly positive impact.
So glad he’s having a rockin’ summer! It’s a tribute to you and your husband’s parenting skills that he’s rolling with the layoff so smoothly…sometimes kids really pick up on our stress.
I am so glad that 6 has been better for Michael than 5… our 6 year old- sigh. The attitude, and the mouth-y-ness, and the general FREE WILL-ED-NESS! Gosh! Most of the time it is fine, but being home all the time (I teach) for the summer has been, mostly great, but sometimes challenging. I am sure that has nothing to do with the 2.5 year old that thinks NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO is the only word in the English language.
Here is to hoping that our 1st graders have great years!
