I Do Not Have A Green Thumb

by Jodifur on April 19, 2011

Ever since we moved into this house Doug has wanted a garden.  Last year we bought Pear trees, and this year we are going full out garden.

Here's the thing, I should not garden.  I suck at gardening.  I'm allergic to basically the outside, and I kill plants.  But Doug really wants to do this and has been researching plants and vegetables and fruits and has made like 52 trillion trips to the plant store.

This is how he and Michael spent Saturday.

And I said things like "why can't we plant in the ground like normal people?"

And then I got a lecture about why the box was important.  And stopped listening and went back to taking pictures.

And mocking.  Because how can you not mock?  They are just both so serious about this.

I doubted the goldfish, and that is still alive.  And I love vegetables.  So perhaps this whole thing will work out.

We have garden boxes. I trucked in my own dirt, because the soil quality around here is terrible and I have no desire to pick up lead poisoning.
Dirt cheap is a misnomer – dirt is *expensive.* At least, the lead-free kind is.
It is the greatest thing in the world to be able to eat fresh tomatoes all summer long.

We bought our house because my husband truly believes he is a gentleman farmer like John Adams. Unlike John Adams, we have full time jobs and two kids and the x-box. So, what I have is a half-dead lawn, two bean plants and lots of seed catalogs. One year, we had 5 tomato plants that grew giant tomatoes that never ripened and I had to pull the plants out of the ground at Thanksgiving. Every year my husband threatens to build those raised bed boxes – and this year is no different. Good luck with the garden!

So, I vote for your role in the growing of the family garden to be Official Picture Taker. For Doug’s and Michael’s sake. And the veggies, think of the veggies.

Want some free seedlings? I have too many and they’ll get trashed otherwise.

Not everyone is meant for gardening. You can prepare what they harvest and mock from the sidelines. Just be glad your hubby has something that keeps him happy and busy and out of your hair! Ha. Both my hubby and I have the gardening gene and have put one in for the past 8 years. We keep making it bigger, just along the border of our fence. Everyone seems to be doing raised beds this year (see Kim’s post at A Beautiful Wreck). I’ll check back on here to see what they plant as you’ve got me curious now! :-)

Good for you. Change can be hard, but I know you can do it.
