Life From Scratch

Life from scratch

I'm lucky enough to call Melissa Ford of Stirrup Queens fame a friend.  When I heard her read at the BlogHer 2009 keynote I made sure to find her and tell her I thought her post was amazing, but also, I thought we knew each other.  We played some Jewish geography and discovered we went to camp together.  Overnight camp a million and a half years ago.  Since then she had became one of my favorite DC blogging pals.

Becuase of that I could not wait to read her novel, Life From Scratch (affiliate link).  And it is not because she is my friend that I can tell you all that I loved it.  I read it it in two days and every time Doug or Michael tried to talk to me I shushed them.  True story.  I then asked Melissa if I could interview her or do a giveaway.  I get to do both!

Here is my interview and below you will find out how to win one of three copies of Life From Scratch.

J: Why did you decide to write a novel?

M: I didn't exactly.  When I sold my first book,  Navigating The Land Of If (nonfiction) (affiliate link), the book contract had a right of first refusal.  Which meant that whoever published the book they would get to see my next book first.  My agent suggested I write a non fiction book so she could try to sell that.  And even though I had an MFA in fiction, it wasn't were my head was.  My head was in nonfiction and blogging.

J: How similar are you to the character of Rachel?

M: Well, I'm neurotic like Rachel and I tend to over think.  I'm also awkward like Rachel.  (For the record, I don't think Melissa is awkward at all.)  But I'm not a food blogger and I'm not divorced.

J: Your known for being an infertility blogger but this story is not about infertility.  Even so you weaved infertility through it.  Was that important to you?

M: It was important to me to show it is not always easy to have a baby.  I wanted to show a more realistic view of single motherhood than is frequently shown in chic lit, that the crazy friend just has a baby by accident.  That a lot of single mothers try hard to have a baby and it is not always easy.

J: You grew up in in DC, yet you set the book in NYC.  Why?

M:  I couldn't imagine Rachel living anywhere other than NYC.  I'm not a fan of NYC, but when I tried to set her in other places the story didn't work.  I tried Boston but it didn't work.  It's not that food bloggers don't live in other places, they do.  But she needed to live in NYC.

I wanted to show Melissa two of my favorite passages in the book and have her commenton them.

The first one I loved because Melissa captured exactly how I feel about blogging and why I love it so.

Blogging can seem a little self-indulgent; foisting your free therapy on everyone else in the world.  But some of us can't afford a vacation from life and therapy, so free isn't half bad.  Plus, the night I recieved my first comment was like finding life on Mars.  I was this tiny voice yelling from my apartment in New York City, and someone actually heard me.  And took the time to tell me so.

M: Blogging is sometimes like free therapy.  Which was why Josh set up my blog.  I stopped going to therapy when the blog started.  Instead of one persons point of view I had so many other people's point of view.

The second section I highlighted because I'm an average girl.  And I never, ever believe I'm pretty.  And I've never heard anyone put it in words before.

But average girls can never believe it when they're told that the cute boy likes them or that they've been nominated for homecoming queen or that their blog is being read by thousands of people each day.

M: I'm an average girl.  I get it.

J: You told me there was going to be a sequel.  Can you give us a sneak peek?

M: Rachel is getting remarried.  And it is going to be a different wedding process than it was doing the first time.  She tries to learn how to balance her private life with her blog life.  Plus it take place in the summer and there is a certain blog conference she could attend….

J: When I tweeted I was interviewing you people wanted to know "how you did it all?"

M: I don't do nearly as much as people think I do.  I'm not on line all day.  When the kids are home I'm not on the computer at all.  I shut down email from 11-3 and write.  It takes me three months to write a novel.  (My chin dropped by the way.)

Melissa shared with me she has finished a different piece of fiction, it is a young adult book without vampires!

I have 3 copies of Life from Scratch to give away.  Just leave me a comment telling me your favorite book.  3 winners will be picked from random.  Contest closes Tuesday, January 11th at 5 pm and a winner will be announced Wednesday morning.

*This contest is not sponsored.  The books are being provided by the publisher.  I was not compensated in anyway to interview Melissa or do this giveaway.   In fact, I asked to do it.

Great interview!

It would be impossible to pick my favorite book. One of my favorite recently-read books is “A Girl Named Zippy” by Haven Kimmel.

My fave book of all time is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. A great book to ask the man in your life to read – the man I married is the first one who read it in its entirety AND was able to have an intelligent and interesting discussion with me about it, feminism, and the future of America. :)

Thanks for the interview! And THREE MONTHS? I am such an underachiever. One of my favorite books is one I just re-read: “A Tree Grows In Brooklyn” by Betty Smith. It’s one of those books I never outgrow and always love.

Sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out.

My Favorite book of all time is Watermelon, by Marian Keyes. I can’t believe it only takes her 3 months to write a book. Sometimes It takes me that long to write a long blog post. (Seriously!)

For most of my life, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith was my favorite book. Then, in 2004, I read Margaret Atwood’s Blind Assassin. Now I can’t decide which is my favorite, so I’ll have to cheat with TWO favorites. :-)

I don’t have a favorite book. I have favorite authors though. Pat Conroy, Dorothea Benton Frank.
I’d love to read Melissa’s book. I think I met her last summer not actually realizing who she was!

I have trouble remembering books that I loved in the past, but I’m currently reading The Pillars of the Earth and love it. I’m also one of the millions who loved The Help.

I’m gonna have to go with my most recent favorites, and it’s a series. I’ve been totally loving the Sookie Stackhouse Series by Charlaine Harris. It’s pure fluff, I’ll admit, but great reading to escape the real world for a while!

Yay, Melissa! And no matter what she says, she very definitely seems to do it all…
My favorite book is always shifting. For a long time it was A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens; then it was Handmaids Tale by Margret Atwood; then Time Travelers Wife.

One of my all time favorite books is The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. It is such an amazing book and, evidently a lot of other people thought that too, there are plans to make it into a movie.
I absolutely can NOT wait to read Mel’s book.

I am so excited to read this book! Im also extremely jealous she can complete a novel in 3 months:-)
My favorite book of all time would have to be Redeeming love by Francine Rivers. However, anything written by Ted Dekker rocks my socks right off.

Melissa is so amazing!!
I don’t know if I could pick ONE favorite book. I’ve loved Shel Silverstein and Roald Dahl since I can remember and they still stick with me as I anticipate reading them to my daughter. I love the Harry Potter series and I just finished Same Kind of Different As Me and it was EXCELLENT.

Because it’s you and I remember her keynote as well, I will break my only NY resolution. Which was to not bother entering any contests.
Hmmm, maybe though, since you are you I can just call this a regular comment on your post. Answering your question. Yep. There it is. I’m not breaking my resolution. Nopes. Ahem.
Rise and Shine by Anna Quindlen. Which is sad to some, I’m sure, because there are a zillion books. But I love it.

I love books that challenge the world and tell a story of the truth that exists out there. I was really drawn to ‘The Glass Castle’ and am currently reading ‘Secret Daughter’ and love it. Especially being able to relate to the miscarriage and adoption side of things.

Hey! So I started reading your blog because of your recaps of Next Great Baker (which I adore, by the way!) And I’ve kinda become hooked :D I came across this article and the book looks amazing! I might just have to go buy a copy for myself. My favorite book in the entire world would have to be My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I love love love it.

I guess my favorite book is Immortality by Milan Kundera, though I’ve read so many other amazing books in the dozen or so years since, that it’s hard to let it remain the favorite. Thanks for doing this giveaway, the book sounds awesome!

Gosh, I’m not sure I can even wait to see if I win! You both make this story sound so compelling!! I don’t know if I could ever pick a favorite book, but I would say the book that influenced me the most was A Wrinkle in Time, because when I read that as a tween, I just knew that someday, I wanted to write like that.

morninglightmama January 6, 2011 at 10:22 pm

This sounds like a unique concept for a novel– and one that so many of us can relate to!
And your question here is the easiest one for me to answer– The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I’ve read it four times, and I even had a quote of it tattooed on my forearm!

wow – I love the interview and the captions from the book. I definitely want to read it now! I have too many favorite books but some that come to mind right away are:
The Fountainhead
Pillars of the Earth
Memoirs of a Geisha

No favorite book comes to mind. I’m a librarian and I love to read, so there are so many I’ve read and loved. I will say though that I’ve read all the books in Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series many times over. In fact, they are the only fiction books that belong to me (as opposed to my children) in our house right now.

Well, it’s always hard to pick a favorite, but the last book I read “The Wet Nurses Tale” is definitely up in my top 10. I’d love to get a copy of this book since I impulsively joined the book tour but keep forgetting to order it on amazon.
