I'm spending the afternoon as a Kindergarten lunch/recess monitor for Michael's school. And rather then be excited by this fact Michael was strangely disappointed. He explained to me that the "MOMS" (said with an amazing amount of disdain for a 5 year old) who monitor lunch always tell you not to eat your treat first. But you can sneak your treat first if you eat it really fast before the MOM comes over to your table to open your juice box. And if I came to lunch then I would certainly come to his table first. And did I really have to come to lunch? "I mean come on mom? You are ruining my life at 5." He also rolled his eyes. You would think he was 12.
Okay, first of all, I'm not even sure I pack this child a "treat" in his lunch. Unless organic animal crackers count as a treat. (Yes, I am TOTALLY THAT MOM.) Also, my 5 year old has developed a system to buck the lunch box rules 2 weeks into the school year. I'm not sure if I should be impressed or embarrassed.
I'm thinking I should do something to shamelessly embarrass him today at lunch. No? Would that be too much? He is only 5. Maybe it is too early to scar him for life.

Sounds like he’s adjusting to Kindergarten just fine!
This totally made me laugh. Little does he realize how many years and how many way you still have to ruin his life.
Wow, he does sound like a teenager! Does he take the bus or do you drive him to school? If you drive him, it won’t be long before he wants to you drop him off a block away because he’s embarrassed of you
I love that he is doing that. It’s sorta cute. The five year old way of sticking it to the man. Ha.
You know, it’s cute because he’s not my kid rolling his eyes at me!
I don’t pack a treat for my kid’s lunch either and I’m wondering when he’s going to notice that the other kids have a cookie and he doesn’t!

Not that this is at all the point, but… Studies show that eating your dessert first is healthier, because it lessens the chance of you overeating. The theory is that you will always make room for dessert, but you’re more likely to stop eating your normal food when you are full or satisfied.
Way to go Michael! That’s my nephew. I think that he is just a divergent thinker.
Animal Crackers count as a treat in our house. OK with have loosened up and there are “real” treats as well, but a cookie is a cookie.
That really is quite impressive that he figured out beat the system so quickly.
I went and volunteered to be a “room parent”. What was I thinking???
