The One Video Every Parent Should Watch

by Jodifur on January 25, 2010

I don't do serious often on jodifur.  I also don't do parenting advice a lot.  But seriously, just watch this.  I have been reading A LOT of parenting books lately.  And I hate parenting books.  My theory on parenting books is that every kid is different and you can't tell me how to parent my kid.  But Doug sent me this video and we loved it so much we ordered the book.

Ashley Merryman: On Parenting from PopTech on Vimeo.

It's long, but seriously, just watch it.  And no the author did not send me the book and ask me to review it, nor did she ask me to post this video.  In fact, she has no idea who I am.  But I did just follow her on twitter.  Her, and the girl from Glee, which is my ultimate sign of love.

OMG. You’re right. Every parent should see this. And? I’m the mean mom that made my teenager put her phone (and other technology,) away and go to bed most nights by 10pm. At least I got something right! I think I’ll buy the book too. Sounds like tons of great information.

Oh wow! this is great information. Although now I’m kicking myself for every time I’ve praised Nicky for being smart. Crap!

I remember reading when my kids were babies that MORE sleep often helps (instead of “keeping them up later to tire them out”). Thanks for the reminder that they ALWAYS need more sleep, as do parents. :)

Thanks for posting this. We’ve been dealing with these issues with Jacob for the last couple of years and it’s been hard! This clip gave me some encouragement that we haven’t totally been screwing up!! Yay!

Wow – this really gets ya thinking. I may have to run out and get this book. Ironically, I read this last night when I was sitting at midnight in bed with my laptop. AND, Sunday night, Benjamin (5) stayed up until probably 11:30 because of his selfish parents wanting to finish watching the football game at a friends house…. He, predictably, was not in his best form last night.
I’ve wondered about the “you’re smart” praise, and will consciously think about how I praise my kids in the future.

Awesome to see this video. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I may share it as well because it is so important. Another book that further explores the issues of praise and what we say to our kids is “Between Parent and Child” by Dr. Haim Ginott. Much food for thought. . . .
