All I Want For Hanukkah Is A Panda

by Jodifur on December 14, 2009

You know how some weekends are quiet, and some weekends are not?  This was not a quiet weekend.  We started with Hanukkah, and ended at Zoolights.**

The first night of Hanukkah was lovely, and I of course did not take pictures.  I made latkes, and we gave Michael a present he loved.  We lite candles and played dreidel and had a terrific evening.

The second night, the night I remembered to take pictures, was a little rushed, because we were rushing out the door to get to the zoo.  But I took pictures.

Michael was quite disappointed with his present the second night.  And he got a little lecture about saying thank you and being grateful and all that jazz.

Zoolights, on the other hand, was a blast.  Although it was cold, we managed to keep warm with hot cocoa and kettle corn and ducking into animal buildings, like this one.

A clear shot of the panda?  When does that happen?  (I'm so bummed we are losing our baby panda.  I can't even talk about it.)

I had never been to Zoolights before, and I have to say, it was beautiful.  And as a Jew, I really appreciated how non denominational the whole non event was.  Yes, there were lights, but they were non-Christmasy, and there was Carols, but they were singing generic holiday music.  No Merry Christmas everywhere.

(Okay, so reindeer are Christmasy.)

Michael loved the activities for children at all the houses.  My only observation was that they whole zoo wasn't open, which was kind of disappointing.

Michael also met Santa this weekend.  Which was because Santa was in front of our house.  Apparently our new neighborhood runs a Toys for Tots drive and Santa goes from house to house.  So Santa came by, Michael told him we celebrated Hanukkah and Michael asked for a "bike" (really, he has never showed any interest in a bike, ever), And we gave the children some toys.  (Good thing I always keep emergency birthday party toys lying around.)

And my camera mysteriously broke at Zoolights.  So Mommy needs to ask Santa for a new camera, even though my camera is 6 months old.

***The zoo provided me with the tickets to Zoolights. The opinions expressed about the event are solely my own.

Sounds like a fun weekend. So, when I glanced at the first picture it looked the arm in the photo was your son’s and I thought, “Hmm, that’s a really large and hairy hand for a small boy.” Upon closer inspection I am sure it is your husband’s. Made me laugh nonetheless. :)

Zoolights! Awesome! They do Zoolights at the Portland zoo as well. I went last year. I wanted to go over the weekend but I’m a big baby and it has just been way too cold for my liking.
Happy Hanukkah!

As a mother of a child about Michael’s age I have to ask… WHAT are these loved (and even not so loved) presents… I am in need of the ideas for presents!

That sounds like a lot of fun!!! Good luck with your camera. What disappointed him on night #2?
