I was driving by a McDonald's the other day and noticed a sign advertising Filet O' Fish. Their fish sandwich is called a Filet o' Fish? Really? I spent my whole life calling it Filet of Fish. Not that this comes up very much because we don't eat a lot of fast food. Is this because no actual fish was harmed in the making of?
But why is it called Filet O' Fish? Is it like Timmy O'Toole? Or Bill O'Reilly? Is it Irish fish? Does it make you feel better about eating crappy food if you give it a cute name? And does anyone eat this if it is not Lent? Because the only time I have ever seen a sign advetising this was right now, during Lent.

Think that’s perpelxing? In France they call it a Royal-O-Fish. I guess things are better in France anyways as they have a BigMac on whole wheat buns as well.

Interesting. I’m sure it being Lent has something to do with it being promoted so heavily. Personally, the thought of eating anything at McDonald’s makes me dry heave.
Heck, I didn’t even know it was 3 words until I was a teenager. I thought it was filayafish – - like maybe a kinda fish called a filaya. Not sure what would make you assume anything at McDonalds was real. Except they used to have those awesome fries 20 years ago with the little bits of potatos skin on them – - my 3d grade class toured a McDonalds and saw the big potato peeler machine right there in the fast food place.
I have a 4 year old (4 years, 2.5 months). Like your son, she’s a negotiater. She has a mind of her own and is an independent thinker and will not take a “no” without a complaint. It’s just her personality and my mommying for her requires me to be strict. The key for her is putting responsibility on HER shoulders – she has to “put on her listening” ears and if she doesn’t, she loses privileges. Also, it is key for her to *think* she has control in order to get her to do things. For instance, we had a problem with her running around naked and refusing to get dressed. I turned it into a game – she has to get each article of clothing on before I count to 10 (I adjust counting to make sure she always wins). Similarly, she has to choose a bedtime book before I count to 10. It gets her moving and makes her think she is in control. When she doesn’t listen to me, I follow through with a time out or take away privileges. If something happens when she doesn’t listen (e.g. she touches something and it breaks), I emphasize the importance of listening ears. The other day, she actually cried because she doesn’t know why she misbehaves and really wants to wear her lsitening ears all the time.
Ultimately, I never think of age as an excuse. To me, there is no such thing as the terrible twos or threes or anything like that. I love having a 2 year old right now. Yeah, she’s headstrong and will through herself on the floor at times, but I deal with her differently than I deal with my 4 year old. Every age presents its own challenges and no age will magically make things better (or worse). You just need tools for handling the different challenges.
Oops, posted to the wrong post. Well you get the idea!
Yep…it’s definitely for Lent. My husband will occasionally get a filet o fish…I think he does it just to bug me!
Filet o’ fish is offered year round. My dad only eats fish on Fridays, so often will have the filet o’ fish. Personally I think the addition of cheese and tartar sauce is just revolting.
We do eat at McD/fastfood places from time to time — a necessary evil when travelling or needing to grab a quick dinner on way to kids’ activities. No, it isn’t healthy but if the rest of the meals are healthy then we are doing fine.
Another fastfood observation…what is up with the double and triple hamburgers. Super size is gone, but has been replaced by larger portions. Also, do we need a St. Patrick’s Day milk shake…I think not.
