Michael Would Be A Very Good Suburban Housewife

by Jodifur on April 19, 2009

All Michael has talked about the past few weeks is planting a garden.  He is doing a gardening unit at school and he really wants a garden at home.  I told Doug he was in charge of this.

I'm not a fan of gardening.  I'm not a fan of the outside really.  It does not help that I'm allergic to the outside.  Seriously, I once went to an allergist and of the 52 environmental allergens he tested me for, I was allergic to 49.  The only things I was not allergic to was dogs and horses.  I told Doug that meant we should get a horse.  He told me that was not what that meant.

I also really don't like plants that much.  I mean, they are fine in a generic, help bring oxygen to the earth kind of way, but not in an I want in my house kind of way,  Also, my house, kills plants.  I cannot keep a plant alive.  Give me a plant and it will be dead a week later.  Better yet, don't even give me a plant.

So, if Michael really wanted a garden, it was up to Doug.  Because I would just kill it.

So we went to a garden center.  I never want to go to a garden center again.  I was allergic to the whole place.  And they had a cat, which I am also allergic to.  To Michael this may have been a toy store.

And then we came home.  And Michael and Doug did things with potting soil, and sunflower seeds, and a watering can.  I think it is called planting or potting or something like that.

I now have a plant.  In my house.  I think they need water at some point.  I hope it is not counting on me for nourishment because this will not end well, trust me.

Oh man. Good luck (to the plant)! My husband bought me an Aero Garden. I was so excited about it until I learned I had to trim plants and water and give vitamins and stuff. I mean, I thought the point was put the thingies in and watch it grow! I’m right there with you. I like plants, but someone else has to be responsible for them!

When I was younger, I tried to explain to my mom that I was allergic to yard/garden work. She said I was full of it. Last year, went for an allergy test. Turns out I’m allergic to the outside, just like you. I had way too much fun shoving that in my mom’s face :)

I hate gardening too. I don’t like dirt or worms. And I have kept exactly one plant alive in my life. Until I killed it after I moved and forgot it existed.

He’ll love it. We have a vegetable, fruit, and herb garden in addition to flowers outside and the kids love taking care of it.

I just spent the entire weekend gardening and doing lawn care…but it’s not because I love to garden. Seriously. I just like the benefits of it, like homegrown veggies and a nice looking yard.
But it helps that I love the outdoors and I’m not allergic to outside.

I’m the same way… I can’t keep a plant alive for the life of me. My 4yo insists on planting a garden, or carrots at the very least (she doesn’t eat them but thinks the rabbits that visit our backyard will). I actually found myself telling her… “You can’t get a plant until you’re responsible enough to take care of it!” I think my mom said the exact thing to me years ago… about getting a dog.

I sooooo feel for you! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the I*D*E*A of plants. I think flowers are so beautiful. Plants and all things living? Terrific.
And somehow, (having a uterus and all) I am in charge of keeping all things alive. Well….
enter… allergies!
NOT GOOD.
That’s why I love photos. I love to take photos of flowers, plants, and things that are living, and then adore them from… afar.

Nicky and I just made the effort to plant him a garden last weekend. An edible garden. In a half barrel by the back door. Green beans, purslane, a tomato plant, carrots and lettuce. I see sprouts and nothing’s dead yet. Wish us luck!
My philosophy of gardening up till now has been survival of the fittest. Darwin Gardening. I should patent it. I just scratched the ground, sprinkled seeds, raked, watered and walked away. Funny how nothing ever grew though. Damn seeds. Obviously duds. Couldn’t be my methods.
Or maybe I just needed to use weed seeds or something.

So cute!
I’m allergic to a lot of stuff too- and cats (ARGH)!
My parents have 6 acres of gardens- I’m not exaggerating- you can visit their open garden tour they hold once a year (Not that you’d want to :) anyway- as a result- I don’t want to have anything in my yard that takes any kind of maintenance… plants in pots, a deck, screened in porch- now we’re planning on a patio :)
I’m with you !!!!!

He’s so cute… my Max just likes to throw the dirt around and “water” the plants by throwing water everywhere.
(Not that I’m much of a gardener; I have poor skills, to say the least!)
But I feel ya on the allergies – I’m allergic to a very long list of things, too.

At Target, in the $1 bins, they have these little teeny tiny pots that come with a little disk that turns into dirt (but not really dirt) when you add water and seeds which you place on top. Then you water and little plants grow. Totally took care of Lucas’s desire to grow plants.
And, when there is real gardening to do, Lucas and Abel get all dirty and I happily trot off to the grocery store!

aimee, where are these 1 dollar bins? I thought only Walmart had stuff like that. Never seen such a thing at Target, myself.
