4 Is Not Better

by Jodifur on April 1, 2009

I'm over on DC Metro Moms talking about how Michael's behavior has not improved since he turned 4.  Just wanted to share one of my favorite parts of the post…

Everyone told me, the twos are hard.  The
threes are hard.  Just wait until he turns four.  Four is better.
Michael has been four for two weeks.  Everyone lied.

The way people were talking, I expected the Heavens to part and the sun
to shine and the birds to start chirping and my preschool monster to
turn into the most obedient child on earth.  I expected all sentences
to begin with please and the answer to every question to be yes ma'am.

Wait a minute.  Maybe four is better and my expectations were just way off base.

LOL!! They lied.
4 is not better. I know this because I had one like your Michael. It will get worse before it gets better. You need to be strong. Make him do for himself, make him do what you ask when you ask, make him stop trying to negotiate… These are skills he can use on his friends, not his mom.
Then and only then will it get better. My #1 is now 16 and a responsible, articulate, bright, funny member of society – it was a long time coming.. and a lot of not negotiating…
YMMV

Come on now… I’m totally waiting for you to tell me that it’s all true about 4 being better.

I have never parented a four-year-old but I taught them. For a year I taught four- and five-year-olds. And I adored them. But … I never had a just-turned-four-year-old. They had all been four for a few months, so perhaps the magic age is once they’ve settled into four for awhile. I’m terrified of three just based on that experience. I wouldn’t go near that three-year-old room if they were offering me money. (And, for what’s it worth, there were some just-turned-four-year-olds in that room.)
