I’m Counting on You To Give Me 45 Minutes of Material

by Jodifur on December 4, 2008

I just got the confirmation call for my MRI. I either misunderstood my doctor or something was not explained to me well, because she ordered BOTH a scan of my left hand and a full body scan. So I have to go in the machine thingie for 45 minutes. They asked me if I was claustrophobic and if I had any metal in my body. Both answers to the questions are no, but this does not sound good.
I'm not easily rattled (shut up, I'm really not) but I'm a little panicky about this. 45 minutes in a loud clangy confining machine. Whatever will I do to entertain myself? Whatever will I think about?
So, please, dear readers, in the comments, leave me your funniest, most inspiring, what you would think about for 45 minutes in an MRI stories. If I could read a book, or twitter, or blog, or do something, I'd be fine. But alone, in my head, I'm sure to panic. I'm sure to decide they will find SOMETHING ELSE wrong with me.
And it is not until 3:00, so I have all day to worry about this. And worry that I'll run late and won't be able to pick up Michael in time and won't be able to contact Doug because I'll be stuck in the machine.

Aww, Jodi. Go in there with a playlist on your iPhone or iPod. The one I went to, the tech let me listen to my own music. They pumped it through the system, I didn’t have the iPod on me during the scan. I did mine and the first ten minutes were odd, but then I got into this peaceful state, and I swear I almost fell asleep. Hopefully yours will go just as well.

I had to have a head scan done, which meant I had to go all the way into the machine with a basket thing over my head. I’m not clausterphobic, but I thought about it. I’m also a big person, so it was a pretty tight fit for me. I’m sure you’ll fit a lot better than I did!

I was actually able to just close my eyes and relax. I nearly fell asleep too.

It’s funny, but when I have time, I usually start thinking about ways I can organize my house, or rearrange the furniture. Like, what if I moved the recliner into Nicky’s room, took the crib out of his room and stored it under the guest bed and then moved the shelf from our room into Nicky’s room….etc. Tom must hate it when I come to him out of the blue with my plans to rearrange the house.

I also think about ways to landscape the backyard. I think of different purposes I’d like to have for the space (garden, cookout/dining, play area, bench swing, dog run, etc.) and then how I could divide up the space. I’ll probably never do it, but it’s so much fun to think about.

Of course, with your love of shoes, maybe you can design some new shoes in your head. :) I’m not much of a fashionista, more of a walking fashion-faux-pas.

And apparently a total organization nerd. :)

Good luck, I’m sure the time will go faster than you think. How often do you get to just lie down with no one asking you to do something for them these days?

Oh Jodi, I am so sorry. I am a claustrophobic person, so I can totally understand your concern. I liked Angela’s idea to think of it as just a little break where you don’t have to do anything for 45 minutes, like if you getting a pedicure or something. (Okay, I know- obviously so not the same thing, but pretending might help.)

I would also tell Doug that if he hasn’t heard from you at a certain time to go pick up Michael, that way you won’t have to worry about the time.

Another thing you could do is make top ten lists in your head. I love making lists of my favorite or least favorite things.

I hope that helps a little, good luck, and try not to think about it too much!

I don’t have any material for you (sorry!) but I think you should make a plan with Doug that if he doesn’t hear from you by a certain time that you are out of the machine then he should pick up Michael. That way you won’t have to worry about it!

Wow, I feel for you. I had an MRI on my head and neck this summer and had many of your same concerns. First, to ease your mind my place actually provided me with headphones and my choice of music genre (country, top 40, …). It wasn’t quite the same as listening to my personal I-pod, but it did help pass the time. Also, the actual time of the entire procedure was much less than what they estimated it would take, so that was nice. Hope that helps and good luck to you!

I had one done recently and honestly I was half asleep. It was actually nice to be trapped somewhere without a cell phone, computer, screaming children, screaming clients… I just spent the time thinking of nothing. However, you should definitely spend your time singing “99 bottles of beer”.

I hear you. Once every 2 years I have to have an MRI series that lasts 2 hours (TWO FRICKING HOURS) and it totally sucks. My next one is in February and I’m already dreading it.

Usually the CD player is broken at Children’s Hospital where I have mine done (since most of their patients are sedated during MRIs), so I really like Tracy’s idea. I will keep Angela’s suggestions in mind too, just in case the music idea doesn’t work out!

Good luck with your MRI.

I’m with everyone else on the bringing an ipod or such device– but what about downloading a book to it today before you go in? Then you could listen to a story for the time and before you know it, you’re time will be up! :)

Good luck– you’ll do great!

When taking time to daydream: on the el, etc. I often think about how my life would be different if I won millions of dollars in the lottery: what kind of apartment would I move to? Would I buy something or continue to rent? What kind of car would I get? Would I quit my job and stay at home at day, cooking, doing yoga and studying for the GRE? It’s a quite nice daydream…but I don’t ever buy lottery tickets, so unlikely to ever happen!

I’ve never had an MRI, so I don’t know how feasible this is, but I would recommend you take a nap! A blissful, toddler-free nap.

Here is what I used to do … way back when dealing with a wee bit of anxiety I learned to do some metal imagery which is way less useful than a valium or a large glass of red wine, but in combination with some slow yoga-ish breathing it can help pass the time. So personally, I like gardening and I imagined building my dream garden.(i know, but this is calming to me, i’m really zen about working in the dirt) so … I very slowly imagine building a big stone wall around my garden and I focus on each little step and before I get too far, I fall asleep.
Think of something that you enjoy, breath deeply, eyes closed and focus on small little steps and imagine each sensation.
Hope that helps …

Or, plan a trip in your head, a vacation, a long drive, imagine every step of the trip, what you will see, how it will look, feel, taste … plan a meal, decorate a room — you get the idea.

Can you nap because that’s absolutely what I would do with 45 minutes in a confined space. Hope the time flies by friend.

Think about whether or not you would be fired if you let me do all your redacting. Man, I always loved redacting. It was like going to work and getting to color all day.

Now discovery, man I hated discovery. I’ll do your redacting but not your discovery.

I’m not clausterphobic either, but I would bet that being in that thing would make ANYONE clausterphobic.

Can you bring your iPod? Maybe download a book or a podcast.

Otherwise, I would sleep and dream about Robert Pattinson. That would be a GOOD 45 minutes!

Hang in there — I actually don’t mind MRIs – I think the last one I had I took a great little nap (no sedation required here, I am always tired!). Music will help too – but hopefully you can just enjoy the time to relax. Or you can plan more blog posts…that’s always another nice thing to do with some down time…

Aww. I’m so sorry Jodi.
What about music? Will they play music for you? A CD? An Ipod?
What about thinking about all the things you are thankful for? Or think about little things your son used to do as an infant that you haven’t thought of in forever. Like, I just remembered this morning that my girl used to call me Moomoo for awhile. It made me giggle.
I hope things go well.

Nap time? That’s what I’d do. Then they’d have to do it all over again because I’d probably drool.

I compose blog posts in my head when I have uninterrupted time and I’m not sleeping. They don’t always make it to the page, but that’s what I do. Maybe you could start a book in your head?

I had an MRI when I was like 12 or something. Brought the soundtrack to Top Gun with me. They had the damn music cranked up so loud it was literally screaming “HIIIIIGH-WAY TOOOO THE DANGER ZONE…” during the whole thing. And I was too afraid to move so I couldn’t ask them to turn it down.

I’m sure they’d give you something to calm your nerves if you wanted.

I’ve been in a bunch of boring meetings, and here’s what I’ve been writing down to look like I’m paying attention:
* Try to name all 50 states without looking at a map
* Try to remember every course you took in college. For bonus points, remember the days/time of the courses.
* Try to remember every address/phone number you have had in your life.
And, here are some of my surefire ways to cure insomnia:
*Choose an actor/actress, and try to remember every movie that person has been in. Or, conversely, play a version of the Kevin Bacon game: think of an actor/actress, and then think of costars until you get back to the original actor/actress.
* Make a word chain: two words that make sense together, followed by a word that makes sense with the second one. For example, “eggs-benedict-arnold-bread-dough-boy-george…” Again, try to make the chain get back to the beginning.
* The redecorating and what would I do with a million dollars are great options. I have several additions planned for my house.
* If there are numbers around, try to figure out a mathematical equation for the numbers. (This is a great thing to do when there’s a digital clock next to you – how many equations can you find before the time changes?)
Okay, that last one makes me look really insane. I guess I’ll stop now. Good luck!!!!

Ooh…I just remembered what makes the “50 states” thing even harder…try to write all 50 without counting to see if you have 50 yet! You can’t really do that in the MRI, but I totally recommend it during the next boring meeting!

All these are great suggestions! I’ve had several head MRIs (so my whole body is in the machine, basket helmet thingy on, etc.). They’ve always given me headphones – but hooking in your own music sounds great. I usually start out doing my yoga breathing. And honestly, I find the noise of the machine to be kind of soothing-it’s loud but rhythmic. I always fall asleep, and I don’t think it ever actually last the whole 45 minutes. Another option – if you can figure out a way to not drive there or back – is to take a valium. Good luck!
