When Michael drives with Doug, they listen to Daddy's music. Primus, Rusted Root, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, and other bands I had never heard of before we started dating. I was driving Doug's car the other day and Michael kept saying, "no Mommy, I want Rusted Root." "This is Rusted Root, Michael" "NO IT'S NOT." I pulled the cd out of the player and he was right, it was King's X. I put Rusted Root in and all was happy in Michael's little world.
When we went to Lancaster this weekend Michael and Doug picked out the music. We had Dave Matthews, Elvis, and U2, and Michael could recognize each artist. "This is the King, Michael." "No Mommy, it's Elvis." "Michael, Elvis is called the King." "No Mommy, he is Elvis."
Doug has even taught him to headbang. I have a 3.5 year old headbanger.
When Michael is in the car with me he listens to Dinosaur 5 or the Sirius Kids Channel. Sometimes I can convince him to listen to Sirius Hits One, or even the Broadway channel. I'm not sure how he figured out the difference between mom's and dad's music, but he did.

While listening to Tommy the Cat at a stop light Monday afternoon.
“Michael, I have to stop head-banging now because I can’t head-bang and drive at the same time.”
“Daddy, I’m going to stop head-banging because I can’t sit in my seat and head-bang at the same time.”
“OK, Michael.”
“Daddy! More Cat song!”

My son too loves everything from Kindermusik to nursery rhymes to Neil Young to Fleetwood Mac. He even sings Carly Simon’s “Your so Vain”! Children are definitely the product of what their parents like, and what they like too!
It’s wonderful hearing them sing, isn’t it?

My kids listen to my music in the car and when I feel like being a “Nice Mommy” I’ll let them listen to their Victor Vito CD or a couple other ones we have and if I’m really in a good mood they can listen to their Curious George CDs which is my opinion is like listening to water drip slowly one drop at a time.

Gee how could he tell the difference between kids music and real music? lol.
We got an MP3 player for Noah for his 6th birthday and I struggled with what to download. I finally decided on the “milder” of my music, and some harder songs that would have something he might learn from. Like 10,000 Fists in the Air. He hadn’t really gotten the whole “thousand” concept yet, but now he does. It’s hilarious to hear him sing along with Disturbed!
