What The Fuck?

by Jodifur on May 20, 2008

I just got Michael's preschool packet. Normal stuff, medical packets, emergency contact forms, blah, blah, blah. And then I look at the calendar. Because of my work schedule, Michael will have two different teachers, a Monday, Wednesday, Friday teacher and a Tuesday, Thursday teacher. And because of that we have two back to school night, two parent teacher conferences, two visitation days, etc. etc. None of these events offer childcare. So, I figured Doug and I could switch off.
Nope, both parents are required to go. To all of them.
Am I supposed to leave my kid alone? Because it's so easy to get a sitter on a weeknight. Sometimes I wonder who thinks of this nonsense.

The two teachers and meetings with no childcare track with my experience. My friends and I usually schedule them back-to-back and take turns watching each other’s kids.

The meetings are usually day, though, so only one parent goes, and they are certainly not mandatory!

Maybe your school is sounding more threatening than encouraging, more harsh when they mean to emphasize how much you should do this.

Our school “strongly encourages one or both parents to attend” the conferences.

Maybe yours means that more?

I’d ask!

Both parents have to go?

In what reality do these people live?

Often times David and I will be heading off in different directions with different kids and have a third thing for one of us or one of them which goes undone or to which we appear late.

They need to just be thankful if one of y’all shows up.

Seriously? For preschool?

What if parents work alternate shifts? What if one parent travels regularly?

What if one parent has a restraining order against the other?

That is tough. Maybe you can at least schedule the conferences back-to-back.

I finally decided… now that I have two kids in school, and two parents who work, they’re just going to have to do it on my terms. Let’s see… Conferences for the two kids, at the same time and both parents are required to attend? Nope. You’re getting one. Doing it without childcare? You get one parent, or the kid is in the room. Do it during working hours? Sorry, you’re getting one parent – we switch off – and they’re just going to have to deal with it.

Seriously! How do they expect that to happen? That’s bull with the two teachers. One is understandable, but why both? Can’t the teachers compare notes or something?

Seriously, WTF. But also, welcome to school. Seriously not working mom friendly, in my experience thus far (all of one year).

I guess I’m just one year ahead of you as my son finishes his first year of preschool, so take my extremely sage advice with a grain of salt:

Day of the conferences? The teachers are exhausted, their throats are shot, they are just trying to impart the info you need to know about your child and his development. The day of the conference, they will probably be happy to have the focus and questions of just one parent. Just go yourself or designate your husband. Seriously.
