And Now For A Totally Random Off the Wall Question

by Jodifur on May 27, 2008

For those of you who have caller ID, be it on your cell phone or your home phone, do you answer the phone like you know who it is, i.e., hi mom, hi honey, hi Kim, or do you just say hello?
I just say hello, and make the person ask for me or Doug and acknowledge themselves, unless it's Doug, then I just say hi. Which is weird, why don't I just act like I know who is calling, which I do? Is it because when I was taught phone manners we didn't have caller ID? Will Michael just say hey Bob?
I have no idea why I thought of this, but I felt like it was important enough to share.

It totally depends.

Even though I have caller id sometimes I still don’t know who it is.

I only answer the phone like I know who it is if it’s a family member or a really close friend. Other than that, I pretend not to have caller ID.

I had a boyfriendn in high school, though, that would always answer my calls with a really formal greeting even though I was calling his cell phone and my name for sure showed up on his phone. I don’t know what his deal was?

It always feels soooo awkward to me. I know who they are, and they probably know I know who they are, but yet I almost never say “Hi Jodi” or whoever it is.

More often than not, I tend to acknowledge the person when I answer the phone…unless it’s a contractor calling, or the salon confirming my appointment. That’d be weird, no?

I’m with you – even though I probably know who it is, I don’t answer like I do – I just say ‘hello’ and then make them ask for whoever. Sometimes if I know it isn’t for me or I don’t want to talk at the moment, I just won’t answer. But I think that it’s still good phone manners to just say hello.

I probably use caller ID more to NOT answer the phone than anything else.

I don’t say ‘hi name’ because there are usually several people from the number calling that it could be. My husband however does assume he knows who it is and will say hi name when hitting the talk button.

I know what you mean! I am *still* surprised when someone picks up the phone and says my name. I usually answer just “hello” unless it’s from a friend’s cell phone, when I know it’s really them.

I just say hello. Or I’ll say “hey!” when I know it is someone I know. But whenever someone is all “hey Kristin” when they answer, it weirds me out.

As others said, it depends. Normally when I’m home, like you, I only say “hi” if it’s my husband or my closest girlfriend. Even if it’s my parents I’ll answer with “hello.” And I don’t usually pick up if it’s a number I don’t recognize. (LOVE caller ID and answering machine!)

At work I will often answer informally if it’s one of my team members, but with my full formal greeting (“This is Nancy XXXX”) if it’s someone else.
