About a year ago Michael pooped on the potty. About a month ago, Michael popped on the potty. Michael now screams if we mention the word potty.
He is the only kid at his daycare not potty trained. When my daycare provider told me she told him today that he was the only kid that wore diapers he said, "I don't care." And he doesn't.
Michael is smart. He talks like a first grader. (Trust me, I'm not being an over the top bragging mom, he really does. He told two women in Starbucks his life story recently.)
WHY WON'T THIS KID POTTY TRAIN? Or at least show interest in potty training? At least sit on the potty? He is is the only child in my playgroup not potty trained. It's not even like we are working on it, we are working on nothing. My pediatrician said you need verbal skills, desire, and sensation. She said we clearly have the first one, definitely not the second, and she had no idea about the third.
In February we are going on the Disney Cruise. If Michael is not potty trained he can not go into the kids club, and I will seriously lose my mind.
Please tell me it will happen. Intellectually I know that he will not go to kindergarten in a diaper. He will not walk down the aisle in a diaper.
I have always promised myself I would not be the parent who pushes their child, who compares their child to other children. Michael is Michael, other kids are other kids.
But, please, PLEASE tell me I do not have the only three year old on the planet who is not potty trained. And please tell me it will not take a year to get him potty trained.
I Need Some Reassurance

In the past week, Mia has gone from screaming at the mere mention of the potty to using it every day. Out of a clear blue nowhere, mind you, just got it into her head to do it. Michael will too.

Rosie is 3 1/2 and still not using the potty regularly. (Yes she has other issues, but she’s whip smart and probably COULD do it, she just WON’T.)
I try not to get too spun up about it either, but it’s hard.
I agree with Beth — he’ll get it into his head at some point that he’s ready, and he’ll just start down that path.

I think my son was about 3 years and 8 months when he was potty trained. He showed zero interest in potty training before that so I think he just did it when he was good and ready and not before. One time I was out with him and a woman I had never met before noticed he was wearing a diaper and she said “He’s STILL in diapers?! What’s WRONG with him?!?” In spite of the fact that he was so clearly damaged and deserving to be mocked because he potty trained a little late he’s perfectly fine and wonderful today and now it doesn’t even matter how old he was when he stopped wearing diapers. Not that I’m touchy about this at all.
And a Disney cruise? Jealous!

One day he will just decide to use the potty. That’s how Drew was. I’m sure it will happen before February! Drew went from screaming about not using the potty to just doing it. The key for us was once he showed interest (which will happen with Michael soon enough) we took him to childcare in underwear and lots of changes of clothes. By the third day, he was (fairly) accident free.
By the way, my niece and nephew, both 3, are completely anti-potty, so Michael is not alone.

I know I’m in danger of giving assvice here….but I have to ask. Have you put him in underwear and let him make a mess of himself? I’m guessing he won’t like it. I did potty training all at once with my 3yr old. I put him in underwear one morning, told him there would be no more diapers (except at bedtime) and that he needed to get to the potty if he didn’t want to keep making messes he had to clean up. He had about 3 accidents the first day, and it dwindled down from there. I had him “help me” clean up each mess, and gave him huge hugs when he made it to the potty on time. None of it was done negatively, just matter of factly…there’s no more diapers, you have to wear underwear, potty messes are yucky and no fun to clean up, so lets get to the potty on time.
Whether he trains sooner or later, it’s only a big deal to you. No one will remember when he trained, and he certainly won’t go to Kindergarten untrained!
Good luck!

yeah, totally jealous of the Disney cruise.
I can’t really help you much since Will sort of self-potty trained at daycare. He’d watch the other kids go, and just followed suit. What did help is when we let him pee standing up instead of sitting down after he watched a friend do that at a playdate. And he refused to use a training potty at all – we always put a seat insert on the regular toilet. Maybe you’re doing these things already, but if not, I hope this helps. I seriously was the luckiest mom ever.

Opie is 3 (3 weeks ago) and NO interest either. He also can talk your ear off but has zero desire.
There are plenty of other 3 y.o.’s in his class that are still in diapers.
February is a long way away! Don’t stress yet.

Harry’s not potty trained either. He’s iffy about the peeing, and absolutely, positively WILL NOT poop in the potty.
His female cousin, one week younger, potty trained six months ago.
Sigh.

No, you don’t have the only three year old in the world refusing to PT. Mine won’t either. It was brought up at his three year old check up and my pedi, who I love, said that none of her kids were potty trained at three. Once he decides he’s ready, he’ll do it.
My pedi also said that it’s easier to PT in the summer when clothing is easier to take on and off.
I was really hoping that Logan would be PT before this baby comes. I’m not feeling really positive about that.

I think once he decides to do it he just will. That’s how it seems to work. I really thought Isabella would be in diapers until she was 12. The kid DID NOT CARE. She would even sit in her poop for hours if I let her… I did do as the above blogger mentioned. I put her panties and just said there are no more diapers. After a week it worked and we haven’t looked back…
And he won’t be in diapers come Feb. I bet!

I won’t even TRY to offer potty advice since potty training has gone so terribly in my house but I will offer lots of empathy.

All I have to say is… really? Disney requires potty training in order to go to the kids club??? Carnival didn’t. We were just required to bring the diapers and wipes.
I think you just have to let him do what he needs to do. Pressure seems to just make it worse. At this point, the whole potty issue is probably the one thing Michael has complete control over. There is no way you or anyone else can force him to use the potty. I would just let him pick out some cool underwear and be excited about it for him. When he’s ready… he’ll do it. Really… why stress? I think there is just too much pressure and stress over potty training.
That all said… February really is a very long way away in the life of a preschooler. It’ll happen.

Clear out a few days on your calendar. Put him in real underwear. If he makes accidents he cleans (with as LITTLE reinforcement from you). When his underwear is dry and also when he uses the toilet give him tons of reinforcement.

Sorry this is late, since I’ve been out of things for a while, but Little Man didn’t potty train until he was about 3 and a half, I think. Maybe later. He had NO INTEREST whatsoever. I didn’t make a big deal about it at all, just from time to time, about every couple of days, I’d ask if he wanted to use the potty. He always said no. Then one day he woke and said “I’m gonna use the potty now.” and he did. And never had an accident. Never.
Trout, on the other hand, we pushed a bit, because we didn’t know any better. She still has accidents at 8. Go figure.
Sunny also trained herself, at around 3, but girls tend to train earlier.
Michael’s fine. He’ll train. Please don’t worry.
