Once again, I’m soliciting advice

by Jodifur on December 19, 2007

We decided to move Michael into a bed. I was planning on going from crib to college, but since Amy did it I now have to. (Actually, we made this decision over the weekend but someone sent me an email today telling me I was a bad Amalah rip off. Hate mail, I love you so).
Anyway, we are buying a race car bed. Twin, not toddler because if I wanted a toddler bed I could just take the side of the crib down and convert it to a toddler bed. Why would I do that since we are moving him since I decided he was ready to move from the crib? It's still a crib, just with the side off. Ironically I wanted to buy a crib that converted to a twin bed but got talked out of it in the store. "You will need your crib for the next baby." "There is not going to be a next baby." "You'll change your mind." I hate when I let myself be talked into things, I knew I wanted a twin bed.
Oh, right, the question. Michael's nursery theme is animals. And a race car bed is going to look strange in it. So, I want to completely change the room to this. Or maybe this.
I'm getting there, I promise. Michael loves his animal room. Will it be too much to change his bed and room theme at the same time? Will this led to toddler freak out? I could get him the bed and put it in the room without changing the theme but then my head might explode because things will NOT MATCH. Trust me, it could happen. Or, do we just buy a plan, boring twin bed and find animal bedding that goes with the room and be done.
Changing the room will be expensive and require lots of effort, but I would kind of like to do it. But not if it's going to mean LESS sleeping on the part of Michael.

I would go with a twin and the animal theme personally. But I’m not a big fan of the race car beds to begin with.

That way when he gets used to the big bed you guys can change the decor together and you won’t have to freak out cause it doesn’t match.

I’d go with the twin bed. That way you can change when preferences inevitably change.

I’d go with a plain twin bed. It’s much easier to change the theme in the room when you don’t have to change the furniture too.

Then when a new movie comes out – presto, new sheets/pillows/comforter, etc and a new room.

When the interest in space develops, presto new sheets/pillows/comforter, some planets hanging in the room, etc and a new room.

Unless you want to get the car bed, change the theme, and then when he outgrows the transportation get a plain bed and change the theme again.

This is mostly me being lazy but I also would do the regular twin (then he can use it until he leaves for college) and animal bedding. If he loves the animals I wouldn’t try to change them at the same time you move him to the bed. Save it for later.

The race car bed is a great idea though. It has sides so that he won’t roll out of it so easily, and it’s a size he can use for many years to come. Do they have race car beds for little girls? If so, I might be copying you :-)

Well, have you asked Michael? It might get him excited about the whole crib/bed switch if he’s involved. Give him the options you like (car bedding/animal bedding) and let him pick.

I don’t know if I’d actually go with a racecar bed or not though. Years from now you might feel trapped with the theme. Unless it’s not too expensive and you plan on a different bed later anyway.

I would redecorate in some way though. But that’s me…. anything that gives a reason to redo a room is a good reason to me.

We’ve been making very gradual changes, which will eventually mean that Mia has all new furniture, new paint, and new decorations. But… we had just moved and thought that had been enough upheaval for her for a while, Michael might not care a bit. Mia has been thrilled with all the changes and may have been just as happy to have it all done at once.

Tough call – because those are some really cute car bedding sets!

I guess if it were me, I would probably get the twin bed and toss some animal bedding on it for now – and then see if he maybe wanted to switch later.

Then again, if he is an adaptable kid, it might be a great surprise to get a whole new room!

We did this to Logan recently. I changed his theme and his bed at the same time. We bought bunk beds (did NOT attach the ladder) and changed to a transportation theme (great minds think alike, esp. since we had the same crib set and themes before :) ). He thought it was so cool. We made a big deal of the room being for a big boy. Getting him excited about it made him WANT to sleep in there.

Ok here goes my advice…when we switched my son out of crib to bed – he had a car/truck theme.

I wanted to make sure I could buy other room decor and not be stuck on one theme. SO…I went with neutral boy colors (navy, red, green, etc…) but kept it simple. That way I could still use some of the cars things, but could add other things as his interests changed.

Oh, and we went with a twin sized bed that is half-bunked. It has a ladder and railings around all sides, but is bunked high enough that he can play underneath. Created ALOT of space.

If having a mismatched themed room would bother you, either get a plain bed and stay with animals or go with the car theme.

My guys had a map themed room as infants (from Pottery Barn) and little lady had a travel theme with the Paris crib sheet set from Land of Nod.

However, while she still has old travel poster prints up on one wall and little trinkets on a shelf on another wall, she now has funky circus bedding Ikea and a portrait of a girl mouse on another wall. I’ve taken a these-things-evolve approach to their rooms.

The race car theme is pretty hot this year, but no matter how hard I try I can’t imagine it in your otherwise jungle theme room.

Unless you have your heart set on the race car bed, you might save yourself some trouble, money and having to cover up your cute animal wall decoration by choosing a different bed design.

If you don’t mind a complete makeover, go wild and paint black and white (racing flag) squares or put up some racing decals so the room won’t look bland after the mural is gone.

I would do it all! First, make a big deal out of the fact that he is getting a BIG BOY ROOM. Then, send him out for the day (with grandparents or something) and do it all. Then make a big deal out of it when he comes home – cover his eyes, say are you ready to see your amazing room? Decorate with balloons and stuff to make it look like a party. We did that when our second moved into a bed, and it was awesome. She didn’t want to get out of the bed. And LOVED the room. Oh – and TWIN definately. IF you go with toddler then you have to do it all again when you transition to a twin. I say one transition is better than two! Good luck!

i think you should go with a nice wood frame bed. it will look nice for longer, and if he decides he hates cars tomorrow you aren’t stuck with a race car frame, i mean it is a lot easier to change bedding then an entire frame you know. plus later it can be a nice guest bedroom bed and regular bed frames are easier to put a trundle under or even just another twin matress for when friends came over (thats what i did when i was little i had a normal twin bed and we just shoved another matress under the frame). i got brandon a nice wooden bed with a matching dresser and i love it because now i’m free to change the bedding all i want to. and if your anything like me and in a few months he suddenly wants tree bedding or bird bedding or diego bedding, well i’m just saying there is no way i could put bird sheets on a car bed because they SO DO NOT MATCH! I would really think hard about getting a nice wood frame bed and then going with a fun new animal bedding
