Non-Pottermania

by Jodifur on July 22, 2007

I have a confession to make. I don't like Harry Potter.
Actually, it's not that I don't like Harry Potter, I don't even know Harry Potter.
I've never read any of the books. I've only seen the first movie. Well, not even seen, I feel asleep on the couch.
I don't get it. He's a boy, he's a wizard. He can fly. He fights the mugels (or are those the good guys, seriously, no idea).
Here's the thing. I'm all for anything that makes kids read. Children lining up to buy a book, amazing.
I love to read. I read all the time. All kinds of genres, chic lit, mystery, nonfiction, Oprah books, cookbooks, biographies, I love to read.
But Harry Potter has just never appealed to me.
All my favorite bloggers are all about the Potter. No one is posting because they are to busy reading. What am I missing?

ME TOO! I haven’t even seen a movie! My guys were too young when it started and I wasn’t interested.

Sure is quiet out there isn’t it?

Oh… you can’t judge the stories on the movies. I’ve read all the books (and have the new one sitting on the table across the room). I have hated the movies though. I really don’t think the story details in the movies do the books justice at all.

I think the thing behind the Harry potter stories is that they are like an epic journey. They are leading to a culmination against evil. J.K. Rowling has been equated to the common day Tolkien, and I see where they get it from. For being a woman who never published anything before, her style is flawless and filled with foreshadow and hidden meanings that take serious sleuths to discover.

It’s pretty good stuff. I don’t care so much for the movies, but I generally don’t like books-turned-into-movies…

Oh I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I have seen all the movies, and I even own all of the books. But I have yet to read any of them…I just don’t like fantasy stories, which is a bit of an obstacle in a series about wizards…

I’m a huge Harry Potter fan. That being said, I don’t get how people who’ve never read the books can enjoy the movies. I know that people do, but they movies are so watered down that I don’t think they make a lot of sense. I still enjoy the movies, though.

my computer wouldn’t let me comment before. no, i’ve never read potter and seen the movies. i have no plans to. i’m not into any “fantasy” books. it’s great that people are so enthusiastic, but i think it’s a little over-rated, i’m sure. it always seems like this manic behavoir comes with those who are into fantasy like star wars, etc. However, LOTR is pretty good…and an unexpected like.

Another non-fan here, Jodi.

Fantasy hasn’t been my thing for years. I read Tolkien and Brooks when I was in high school, and that was sufficient for me.

Having said that, I confess that I am all geeked up for the new Harry Turtledove novel that is due out in a week!

Woo Hoo!

its about friendship and growing up during the difficult teenage years. don’t watch the movies, they’re garbage, except for the third one.
