Yesterday we had a playdate with Amy and Noah. And I was nervous for it all weekend. Doug teased me and told me you'd think it was a real date. I told him it was like going to the Prom Queen's house.
And today Amy posted this:
"Are you nervous? Are you afraid of saying something dumb or coming off as weird/snobby/lame? Well, so is everybody else."
Even though Amy was talking about going to Blogher, that was me, meeting her! I don't know why I was so nervous. She was the first blog I ever read. She got me into reading blogs. And well, I wanted her to like me. Because I have this thing about people not liking me. I can't even imagine how nervous I would feel going to Blogher.
There was also a little bit of the high school popularity contest feeling. She is an Internet rockstar. A blogger a lot of you probably read. And she wanted to hang out with me, me. I'm so not cool. I'm the opposite of cool.
And you know what? I had a blast. Amy is just as lovely and funny in person as she is online and Noah has got the be the most adorable child I've ever seen, second to my own son, of course. Michael had so much fun and spent the entire ride home talking about their dog. "Mommy,I like lil' doggie" was all I heard the ride home. "I go see lil' doggie?"
But even more importantly, I think I made a new friend. We drank wine and chatted, and never had a lull in the conversation. It's been a while since I've had one, but I think that's a very good date.
The bottom line is, be yourself. People either like you, or they don't. You either click, or you don't. And it doesn't really matter, because it's not like you ever have to figure out where to sit in the cafeteria on the first day of high school again.
Do we ever leave high school?

I’m not going to Blogher either (we can e-bond together over the weekend). I think I would be nervous too to meet “everyone” I’ve developed e-relationships with.
Glad you got to meet Amy though. Sounds wonderful.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I have to admit I’m nervous about BlogHer.

It’s funny, I have a post somewhat along these lines brewing for this week. Great minds think alike.
Glad the meeting with Amy went well, though. I am sure she was a hoot.
P.S. I’m not going to BlogHer either.
