Things I like

by Jodifur on April 5, 2007

I'm thinking of starting a new "feature," things I like.
Ever since this post, I'm getting emails asking me for wine recommendations, which I love. So, I thought I'd start off the first ever feature of Jodifur with some wine choices. And then maybe next week I'll do makeup, books, or whatever.
If you hate this idea and think it sucks, tell me. I'm not even sure it will be weekly, it may just be when I feel it.
Let me start by explaining my wine philosophy. Drink what you like, with what you like. I don't eat meat, but I tend to like reds better than whites. So, I drink reds with fish.
Also, never apologize for your palette. Wine is all palette. I hate sweet wine, other people love it. It is what it is.
And lastly, you do no need to spend a lot of money to drink wine well. I rarely buy a bottle that is over $20, and some I love are under $10. It better be a special occasion for me to spend a lot of money on wine.
I hate Chardonnay, so if you are looking for a good Chardonnay recommendation you have come to the wrong place. But here are some other good bets when it comes to wine, all relatively inexpensive.
Savignon Blanc-
Nobilo, or Markham are two of my favorite under $20 picks.
If you are looking to splurge you cannot beat Cakebread. Actually, everything Cakebread does is good, but they are pricey.
Riesling-
As I said, I am not a sweet wine girl. But, I discovered in my wine class DRY Rieslings and they are phenomenal, especially with spicy food, which I love. My favorites are the French Alsatian Rieslings, especially Hugel.
I'm also not a Merlot drinker, but here are some other red recommendations. And I love a good red blend.
My current favorite red wine is Siena, a blend of Sangiovese with Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. It's more than $20 so I must really like it.
To give a shot out to a local vineyard, (not Md., but VA wines really are good), Veritas makes great red wines, especially the Claret. And Horton Norton is also very good. Both are red blends that stand up to food very well.
I love Pinot Noir. Even before sideways, Pinot was one of my favorite wines because you can pair almost anything with it, and it works. My favorite, which I admit is pricey, is La Crema. For a less special occasion Pinot, and a more everyday wine, try A to Z. You can very rarely go wrong with an Oregon or Washington state Pinot.
So, let me know what you think of my selections, hate them, love them, or think there is something else I should try? Do you like "things I like," or do you think I've becoming completely full of myself to think people would care?

I like this segment. I think you should continue it. I’m gonna go out and get myself some of your wine recommendations .. I am usually a sweet wine girl, but Wayne hates them. So I think he’d like almost everything you wrote.. Plus he hardly eats meats either. Thanks!

I think this is a great idea. My husband and I have recently gotten into wine so I’m going to add a few of your recommendations to my “try before getting pregnant” list. Thanks!

Why is it that no matter what, California reds give me a pounding headache after only a few sips and Australian wines make me idiot drunk after one glass? Did they tell you why this may be in your wine class?

So while I may take some reservation indulging on the California wines, the dry Reisling sounds great as I eat a lot of spicey food as well. And reds and red blends are amazing. I will for sure be on my way to purchase and taste your expertise.

Great segment! I love your recommendations…

Great post. I like the idea of “things you like”. I tend to be very nosy (which I think is why I love blogs). I’m always up for a good recommendation.

I like this idea! I bought some wine the other day and though about you. I am a sweet wine girl but didn’t figure that out until a visit to the winery at Biltmore a few years ago.

I think it’s a good idea. Something different…which is good. I’ll have to try a few of these wines.

I like this idea. As for wines I am a red wine girl with cabernets and merlots being my favorites. I agree with you about price. I have gotten some great wines at Trader Joes and the girls in my book club by their wines there or cost plus and they are always good. I will, however, not buy wine at the grocery store anymore. I never find a good one for the price. It always sucks. So we stick to trader joes unless it is a special occasion and then we go to our local wine store. I am gonna try some of your recommendations next time I am buying wine. I currently have about 7 bottles to finish before DH will let me get more.
